Hello World – Social Media is the “now” and the “next”

January is a time for new resolutions – well this is one I intend on keeping! My very first blog of social media ramblings!

Social Media is no longer a “new” buzz word. It is no longer a “trend“. Social Media is here. It is the now.

“The most reliable way to anticipate the future is to understand the present” John Naisbitt

Businesses need to understand what social media is. It is not just having a business page on facebook and having hundreds of “likes”. It is not just about having thousands of followers on twitter. The power of social media lies in the interaction.

Social media is extremely powerful, just watch this to see some quick (and  amazing) statistics from 2011.

We are living in an age where many purchasing decisions are based completely on our facebooks friends opinions. How many times have you seen a facebook status… “Anyone have the new iPhone 4S, thinking of getting one.. any good?” or even  ”I’m thinking of using NetFlix, anyone use it and think its worth paying for it?”. Worse still, consumers take to social media platforms when they are annoyed over a product, or customer service of a company.

User-generated content is arguably the biggest asset of any social platform. Every platform thrives on UGC which fuels interaction. When people are talking about your product or service through reviews, it increases your SEO in a “social” way.

We all know that review sites aren’t new, but as the world becomes more social people will most likely to listen to what other customers will say rather than be mesmerized by fancy ads.

Social media is not just chatting to friends about the daily goings on, or the latest gossip. Businesses must stand up and take note of the social media platform. It is a powerful tool which needs to be utilized to its full potential.
